The sun is shining bright, and the children are out of school for their summer vacations. Most parents now have the question “How do I keep my child occupied for the next few months?”
Dear Parents,
Summer comes with endless possibilities, and I personally consider it as a golden window in a child’s year. What is so great about this period?
It gives children an opportunity to slow down, pause and self-reflect.
There is time for families to bond and create lasting memories.
Children are exposed to the real world outside their classrooms.
Boredom sparks curiosity and creativity.
So, while you guide your child this summer, the questions you need to really ask yourself are:
Is my child getting exposed to the right environment?
Is his or her curiosity being fulfilled and is able to explore their interests?
Are these opportunities aligned with my child’s talent and passion?
Does my child have free time? Is their day over scheduled?
Am I adding real value to my child’s overall development?
Summer vacation is not a crisis for you to manage when conscious decisions are made and practiced. As a parent, it is not your duty to entertain your children but to guide them.
Here are some purposeful practices that could help you and your child to have a meaningful summer break:
Travel: Experiencing different geographical terrains, climatic conditions, cuisines and culture; Real-time learning.
Summer Camps and Workshops: A great opportunity to socialize and understand that learning can happen anywhere.
Family Rituals: Evening walks, cooking together, sunbathing; Strengthens bond, co-regulates emotions.
Social Interactions: Quality time with friends and extended family members; Develops a sense of belonging.
Outdoor Play: Nature explorations, treks and free play; Grounding and aids physical development.
Encourage Independence: Planning their own day, personal science projects, journalling, budgeting picnics; Develops confidence and agency.
With no notions of social comparison and fear of wasted time, what is your child doing this summer?
I hope you and your children have wonderful bright days ahead.
